Lessons

People typically take private lessons, but you are welcome to share your hour with one or two friends. When you first arrive, I’ll look at your general movement pattern, find out if you are experiencing discomfort, and ask why you’ve come.

The exact format of a lesson depends on your wants and needs. Most likely we will start with the Alexander Technique, performed while you are sitting, standing, lying down, and performing some of your daily activities. If you’ve come for Pilates, I may suggest waiting until you’re a little more familiar with the Alexander Technique, giving us time to re-train your subtle movement habits a bit, so that when you start strengthening your muscles with Pilates, you are doing so in a way that doesn’t reinforce old habits that might have been causing pain and unwanted tension.

If you come expecting only Alexander, I might also ask to put you on the Pilates machine, (reformer and tower). The machine can assist or resist your movement while I guide you verbally and with gentle touch to help you move in specific ways that enhance your functioning.

Regardless of how the lesson takes shape, I am always keeping you and the Alexander principles in mind as I teach. Depending on your situation, we may add Pilates or some Pilates based fundamental movement.
